REEL DEAL

Reel Deal is a short film festival held in Washington DC metro area.

Reel Deal is an effort to create a warm and welcoming space for Indian independent filmmakers and film lovers. The registration for the event is open to anyone of Indian origin from North American region. Reel Deal also is committed to train the next generation of film makers and have a junior category for students up to 12th grade.

Originally started as short film making competition by KAGW in 2013, we have matured as one of the most celebrated premiere film festivals for independent and primarily, experimental filmmakers to showcase their work. KAGW being the parent organization of Reel Deal is committed in nurturing and motivating the cultural aspiration of the Indian community.

Important Dates

Submit your short film between 10th April 2019 and 27th May 2019 to qualify for Early Bird discounted fee rates. You can submit your entries on or before 10th June, 11:59 PM EST. It is not mandatory to provide the video link / Upload the video, during the submission, though you need to provide the link before registration closing i.e. 10th June 2019, 11:59 PM EST. You will receive a confirmation email on your short film submission. We encourage you to submit your entries as early as possible to make use of our early bird discount. We will have an internal screening and judging process for of all the submissions received. If your short film is selected for film screening on the Reel Deal Film Festival event day or nominated for an award we will inform you by an email.

Submit your film

Your film must be a short film of any genre with a running time of 20 minutes or under (including title credits).

Previous Screenings are perfectly acceptable however preference may be given to premiere films when programming Reel Deal screenings.

Films must not have any objectionable content including but not limited to nudity, anti- social message, propaganda etc.

While we encourage Malayalam films, this festival is NOT limited to Malayalam films. The movie can be in any language, however if it is not in Malayalam or English language, subtitles must be provided.

You may submit more than one film as long as each film meets the eligibility requirements. Each entry must be a separate submission

The Filmmaker must be a resident of North American region and should be of Indian descent.

An entry does not guarantee selection to Reel Deal screening or nomination. KAGW reserves the right to reject or disqualify any entries without a refund for the reasons stated herein or on any other reasonable basis.

Frequently Asked Question

At the time of registration it is not mandatory to upload your film or submit the link. If you register before May 27th even without the video you can avail the early bird pricing.
The film will qualify under ‘Junior Category’ if either the producer or the director is under 16 years old. Individual award categories like Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Editor etc. will qualify if the nominee is under 16.
As long as 80% of your film dialogues are in malayalam, your film will qualify.
While we would love to screen every single short film received, the time frame for Reel Deal film festival is limited. Judges will pick 8-10 best films which will be screened and will be followed by 7 minutes Q & A with the filmmaker.

Reel Deal promotes the schedule of screenings via media including newspapers, emails, television, and radio. Reel Deal encourages filmmakers to help promote their films by promoting their screening(s) to industry professionals, distributors, the press and the general public.

Manipravalam award is a special KAGW award given for the Best Malayalam script for the movie that has at least 80% Malayalam script. While we encourage Malayalam script, this festival is NOT dedicated to Malayalam films. The movie may be in any language. However, if not in Malayalam or English language, subtitles must be provided.

Each category be judged without considering the age of the participants in the group. A separate junior award (i.e. age less than 16) for each nomination will open up if there are at least 3 nominations in the category. If there is not, the child may still be applicable for special jury award at the discretion of the judges. The junior awardee must possess a valid school id

Film must be submitted in any of the following ways

  • A private youtube link
  • A private vimeo link
  • A drop box/Google drive/One drive link with the file.
  • Uploaded to Real Deel site

The file should be one of the following resolutions

  • 1080p
  • 4k UHD
  • 4k DCI

And be one of the following formats

EXHIBITING FILMMAKER (“EXHIBITOR”) REPRESENTS AND WARRANTS THAT:

All persons who are featured in the film have given unrestricted permission for use of their images, words, and performances, waiving or assigning to Exhibitor all rights including but not limited to copyrights and moral rights.

To the extent any pre-existing material is used in the film that is not original to Exhibitor, except brief clips of video and/or audio material used only to the extent reasonably necessary for purposes of public criticism, commentary and documentary reporting relevant to the thesis of the film, Exhibitor has obtained unrestricted permission from all rights holders for use of the material in the film and for display and performance of the film or any portions thereof in any and all venues and media, including for promotional purposes.

To the extent any remaining rights relating to the film are owned by third parties, Exhibitor warrants that Exhibitor has all rights and permissions necessary to permit the showing of the film at the Reel Deal and any other events sponsored Reel Deal at which Exhibitor agrees or has agreed the film may be exhibited, and for use of excerpts or portions thereof in any and all venues and media, including for promotional purposes.

All materials submitted to Reel Deal are otherwise the original work of Exhibitor (and its employees, if any), and not of any third party.

BY SUBMITTING THE MATERIAL, THE APPLICANT HEREBY AGREES TO INDEMNIFY, HOLD HARMLESS, AND DEFEND THE FESTIVAL, ITS EMPLOYEES, DIRECTORS, REPRESENTATIVES, AND AFFILIATES FROM ANY LIABILITY, CLAIMS, AND DAMAGES IN CONNECTION WITH THE SUBMISSION AND FROM ANY FEES AND EXPENSES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO REASONABLE ATTORNEYS’ FEES, THAT ANY OF THEM MAY INCUR IN CONNECTION THEREWITH.

By completing the online entry form, Exhibitor constitutes his/her full and complete acceptance of the terms hereof and that Exhibitor has read and complies with Reel Deal Terms of Entry .
